FedEx (NYSE: FDX) is gearing up for the biggest holiday season ever.
The company says it expects each of the four Mondays during the season to be among the busiest in its history.
FedEx Foresees Record-Breaking Holiday Shipping Season
FedEx anticipates its average daily volume of packages (12 million) to double (25 million+) during the busy period.
Luckily the Memphis World Hub, FedEx’s original package sort facility, is well-equipped to handle the rush. Its 42 miles of conveyor belt is equivalent to 443,520 candy canes lined up end-to-end (a comparison that seems esppecially appropriate for the holiday season.)
Moreover, the company has more than 400,000 dedicated professionals all over the world to rise to the occasion. FedEx is also planning to hire 50,000 seasonal employees.
Rising eCommerce Fuels Growth in Holiday Shipping Volume for FedEx
Thanks to the rapid growth in eCommerce shipments, FedEx has seen a huge demand for its services. In 2015, the company saw a 15 percent jump in its peak season volume.
Unsurprisingly, more than 95 percent of eCommerce packages in the U.S. are delivered by FedEx, UPS, and the United States Postal Service.
“If you were to isolate the FedEx eCommerce business, it would become clear FedEx is one of the most profitable eCommerce companies in business today,” Mike Glenn, President and CEO, FedEx Services said during a Q4 2016 earnings call.
FedEx Planning a Merry Christmas
With Christmas falling on a Sunday this year, FedEx has made arrangements to keep customers happy. FedEx Express will be delivering on Saturday, December 24 — Christmas Eve — but it’s not a service day for FedEx Ground.
Another delivery option for customers on Christmas Eve is FedEx Hold at Location.
